Cup games have been on the agenda for the Sheldon and District Winter league. First the second round of the Punchbowl. Lea Hall Sports and Social, currently top of division one, sprung the only real surprise as they beat British Telecom Club, who are at the foot of the premier division. In the all premier clashes Iron Horse, Three Horse Shoes and Saltley Amateur Gardeners progressed to the next round at the expense of Malt Shovel, Castle Vale Residents Association and Sheldon Dukes. Other teams going into the hat for the next draw are, Highwood, Pavilions, St Annes and Gunmakers Arms.

In the preliminary round of the Sheldon Shield, Sheldon Heath Social beat Small Heath Amateur Gardeners 8-1 and Banbury Club took out the Old Bill and Bull with a close 5-4 result.

There were no fewer than three 160 breaks in the Harborne and District Winter league this week, all of them coming in the first division. D.Bourne (Midland Red) in addition to his 160 break had 2x120 breaks and hit 2x100 as his side beat W.C WMC 6-1. M.Vos replied for W.C. adding a 120 break plus 100. J.Best (Hillyfields) was the third player to record a 160 break as well as 2x140 in a close 4-3 verdict over the Raven.

In division two the Pheasant were in top form as they handed out a 7-0 whitewash to Stonehouse Flights, while the Cock Inn beat Avenue Social Club 5-2 and Bartley Green Social Club Flights won 4-3 away to Highlander Flights.

Good wins for the top three teams in division one of the Longwood Winter league. Leaders Globe won their home tie against White Lion 6-2. Second placed Dolphin went one better by winning their away game at Two Gates Club 7-1 and third in the table Winning Post returned to winning ways with a 6-2 win at the Plough and Harrow..

In the second division the two top teams Queens ’B’ and ’A’ played each other. The result all square at 4-4. ’B’ now lead the field with 13 points, but the ’A’ team have dropped to third place on 11 points, one behind the Mercian who returned from the Jolly Sailor with a 6-2 victory.

Just two games were played in the Small Heath Winter league. Custard House defeated McVeighs 7-2 and have now drawn level with top of the table Heartlands Club, but have played one fixture more. In the other fixture Antelope won 5-4 against bottom of the league Gunmakers Arms, who are still looking for their first points of the campaign.

On Monday 26th January former international player Cliff Lazarenko will be taking on thirty local players at the Freebodies, St Johns Road, Dudley. Licensee Gaynor Gardiner and husband Andy took over the pub just prior to Christmas and are trying to restore some of the old fashioned values and community spirit into both the pub and the surrounding area.

The draw for the quarter finals of the Bedworth Gateway Open is as follows, Men:- Nags Head ‘A’ (Peterborough) v Wednesbury RBL (West Midlands),  High Street WMC ‘A’ (Swindon) v Oak and Ivy (West Midlands), Stirchley United WMC (Birmingham) v White Hart (Northampton), Tipton Sports and Social Club (West Midlands) v Duple Social Club (Blackpool), Ladies:- Dunstable FC (Bedford) v Black Horse (Worcester),Six in Hand (Gwent) v Air Balloon Tavern (Bristol), Lincolnshire Nailer (Skegness) v New Warwick Social Club (Warwick), Newport Pagnal WMC (Milton Keynes) v White Hart (Swindon).

All matches to be played on or before Saturday 31st January.
